Summer Wedding Flowers in Season Across Pennsylvania

There is a particular kind of beauty that only summer gives you in Pennsylvania. The gardens are full, the color is deep, and the flowers grown closest to home carry a fragrance and softness that travels flowers simply cannot match. When we design a summer wedding here, we start with what the season is actually offering, because a bloom at its peak looks and lasts differently than one coaxed along out of season. Here is what we reach for, and why.

Early summer, roughly June, is one of our favorite windows. Garden roses are still generous and open, peonies linger at the very start of the month before they bow out, and sweet peas bring that ruffled, whisper-light texture we love for bouquets. This is also when we lean on foxglove and larkspur for height and movement, and clematis vine for a trailing, just-picked feeling. If your date lands in June and you love peonies, we always talk timing honestly, because their season is short and the last blooms of the year are unpredictable. There are beautiful ways to carry that romantic, full-petaled look forward with garden roses if the peonies have moved on.

By July and into August, the palette shifts warmer and the flowers grow sturdier, which is a gift when the weather turns hot. Dahlias come into their own now, and they are one of the most versatile flowers we work with. They range from soft blush dinner plates the size of your palm to tight, painterly pompons, so they can read romantic or architectural depending on how we style them. Zinnias, cosmos, and celosia bring saturated color and that loose, gathered-from-the-field texture, while lisianthus offers the elegance of a rose with far more heat tolerance. Hydrangea is at its most abundant in high summer too, and it does quiet, important work filling out centerpieces and installations with volume.

Foliage matters more in summer than people expect. The heat that stresses delicate blooms is exactly when structured greenery earns its place. We build with things like eucalyptus, ferns, scented geranium, and flowering herbs such as mint and basil, which hold beautifully and add a fresh, garden scent to a room. Grasses and seeded branches give centerpieces that airy, wild quality that keeps a summer table from feeling stiff. Good greenery is not filler. It is the framework that lets the flowers breathe.

A note on heat, because Pennsylvania summers do not hold back. We have written before about the flowers that hold up in summer, and the short version is that we plan around the temperature rather than pretending it will behave. Bouquets are conditioned and kept cool until the last possible moment, we favor varieties that tolerate a day out of water for the ceremony, and for outdoor receptions we think carefully about where the sun sits and when. If your celebration is fully in the open air at midday, we will steer you toward the tougher, longer-lasting blooms and save the most delicate flowers for shaded or evening moments where they will look their best.

What we love most about designing in summer is how much the season does on its own. The color is already there. The abundance is already there. Our work is to shape it, to give it intention, and to make sure it feels like it belongs to your day and your venue rather than to a catalog. A summer wedding in Pennsylvania should feel a little sun-warmed and a little untamed, held together with care.

If you are planning a June, July, or August celebration and want to build your palette around what will genuinely be at its peak, we would love to begin that conversation. Reach out through our florals and events questionnaire, and we will be in touch within a day to start dreaming with you.
